Stop Smoking Program

Cigarette smoking is one of the most difficult addictions to overcome and there are many approaches available today. Our program aims at targeting and de-sensitizing the emotional triggers that initiate the thought of having a cigarette.

After you have decided that you are really ready to stop smoking, the program increases your awareness of your unique situational and emotional cues and triggers. Using EMDR, a therapeutic approach that was first used with trauma victims, we disconnect the feeling of anxiety from these daily events. By interrupting the automatic response of "lighting up" that has become associated with these triggers, you can then use more effective stress management tools to get you through the day.

Unlike other programs, you do not have to quit "cold turkey". In fact, there is no right or wrong way to stop. Some people stop after a few sessions, most take longer. You will be charting your progress and consulting with your therapist to determine what feels right for you.

The program’s goal is to help you create a personal "stopping" strategy that will work with your life style and discover new healthier coping strategies for handling difficult emotions. Handouts and homework help to increase your awareness and progress between sessions.
